John Larson, M.D., a family physician with Mayo Clinic Health System – Chippewa Valley in Bloomer, recently was named 2013 Family Physician of the Year by the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP). Dr. Larson has practiced medicine in Bloomer since 1982 and is a regional assistant medical director for Mayo Clinic Health System.

The Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) applauds the final report approved today by the Speaker’s Task Force on Mental Health. The report recommends the creation of a Primary Care and Psychiatry Shortage Grant Program in Wisconsin to provide financial assistance to primary care physicians and psychiatrists who practice in medically underserved areas of the state.

pdfMedical Student Leader Stays in Wisconsin for Primary Care Training

Elizabeth Pyne spent her early childhood years in Indianapolis where she remembers that times were not always easy. Due to the prohibitive cost of private health insurance, her family turned to reduced cost community health programs for needed medical care. The experience has stayed with Pyne, who moved to Oconomowoc at age 12, and has inspired her to become a primary care physician. Her hope is to eventually "pay-it-forward" and practice primary care medicine in an urban, underserved community in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) today commended state legislators and Governor Doyle for taking a major step forward for health care reform through legislation creating a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) pilot program. Legislation creating a PCMH pilot program for Wisconsin's Medical Assistance population is contained in the 2009-11 state budget bill passed by lawmakers and signed by the governor.

Two medical clinics in Southeast Wisconsin have become the first clinics in the state to achieve national recognition as Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs), the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) announced today. The clinics include Aurora Health Center, 2600 Kiley Way, Plymouth and Aurora West Allis Medical Center, 8901 W. Lincoln Ave, West Allis. Promotion of the Patient Centered Medical Home concept in Wisconsin is a top priority for the WAFP.
