Event Description:
The Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin chapters of the American Academy of Family Physicians, have partnered together and are excited to announce a virtual self-assessment module (SAM) session centered on mental health in the community on
Sunday, May 5, beginning at 5:00 p.m. CST.This innovative program will use a robust web-based system that will allow family physician learners from across the country the chance to complete an American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) endorsed Maintenance of Certification for Family Physicians (MC-FP) SAM while engaging their peers and an expert content leader from a location of their choosing. To participate, all you need is a computer, high speed internet access, registration, and a few pre-function steps (outlined in three easy steps below).
On the day of the program, participants will use an online polling system to work through SAM questions with our mental health expert. First, questions will be displayed giving participants approximately 30 seconds to respond (time varies based on speed of participant response). Next, results will be displayed and discussed. Finally, answers will be submitted as a group and individuals will be credited for completion of the knowledge assessment portion of the SAM.
The SAM consists of two parts: knowledge assessment and clinical simulation. The virtual SAM program will focus on the knowledge assessment portion of the module. Please note: participants will need to complete the clinical simulation separately at a time of their choosing within one calendar year after completion of the virtual SAM. Once the SAM has been fully completed, the physician learner will receive 12 continuing medical education (CME) credits from the AAFP and recognition for having completed the required Part II stage for MC-FP from the ABFM.
Registration Information:
This program costs $125 to attend. This fee is separate from any applicable ABFM fees. Space is limited to the first 20 registrants from Wisconsin. Additional registrants will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
The deadline to register is Wednesday, April 24, 2013.
Any registrations after the first 20 will be placed on a waiting list and be notified of their status by the end of the day Friday, April 26, 2013.
The entire virtual SAM program will not exceed 100 participants.
Before you participate:
- If this is your first step in your ABFM MC-FP plan, you will need to call the ABFM (1.888.995.5700) and obtain a user name and password. Please tell them you are interested in signing up for a SAM. You may already have a user name and password as a result of previous use of the Board's website, but please confirm this. If you have any questions about how many SAMs are required for you (depending on your re-election cycle) or when you need them completed by, the ABFM can assist you. The ABFM will charge a fee to take their SAM; the amount varies depending on your re-election cycle.
- Once you register with your state, you will receive an email confirmation stating your participation status and within approximately one week prior to the event, you will receive an email from the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians' staff, the managing chapter, detailing the remaining steps required to join the virtual SAM party webinar system. After completion of the virtual SAM party, you will be able to complete the clinical simulation portion at a time of your choosing. When you access your individual physician portfolio to complete this final phase, you will be prompted by the ABFM to pay for the entire mental health in the community module. You must complete this second step within one calendar year.
- Whether you choose to complete the SAM session from the comforts of your own home or the convenience of your office, in order to participate in the SAM session you will need a computer (desktop or laptop) with a reliable high speed internet connection. Armed with your computer, an internet connection, and your ABFM membership - you're ready to go.
This SAM Session is Groundbreaking!
Although live SAM sessions are a popular way of completing the required MC-FP stage, this program is the first of its kind to develop a virtual SAM session and deliver it countrywide to a large group of physician learners at the same time. This cutting-edge program will bring the issues of mental health in the community directly into the physician's home or office with guidance from a peer expert and the knowledge-sharing that occurs when completing the SAM with fellow family physicians.
