The Wisconsin Medical Examining Board formed a committee to create guidelines for disciplining doctors like those used in North Carolina and Ohio, states that rank much higher than Wisconsin in rates of serious discipline. WAFP member and former member of WAFP's Board of Directors, Dr. Rodney Erickson, is currently serving the Medical Examining Board. Dr. Erickson was appointed in February and received a unanimous re-appointment vote in the State Senate later. |

WAFP member, Alan K. David, MD of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Dr. David is the Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He previously served as the family medicine department chair at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Kentucky. Dr. David currently serves as the Chair of the Residency Education Committee for the ADFM. He has also served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians. |

Dr. Brad Meyers of Jefferson was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the WI Air National Guard. Having served on active duty with the United States Air Force in the 1980s, Meyers joined the 115th Medical Group, based at Truax Field in Madison in Jan. 2011. A member of the Wisconsin CERF-P, Meyers is the officer- in-charge of the Green Tent. CERF-P is the acronym for CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package. The CBRNE signifies “chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive.” There are 17 CERF-P units in the United States. These multi-service (Army and Air Guard) organizations may be tasked by the Governor to assist in specialized disaster response missions, particularly those requiring decontamination and mass casualty initial emergency treatment. Staffing includes physicians, nurses, physician assistants, health care administrators and highly trained med techs working hand in hand with Army search and extraction and decontamination teams in a highly mobile response force. Meyers has received training in advanced cardiac and advanced trauma life support, pediatric advanced life support and has spent a two week rotation with the C-STARS course working with the trauma team at St. Louis University, a Level 1 Trauma Center. The CERF-P exercises as a unit a couple of times a year in a deployed mode. |

Shanyn Lancaster, M.D., a board-certified family physician who specializes in sports medicine, has been appointed to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health. Lancaster serves as the assistant director of Student Health Services and team physician for intercollegiate activities at Marquette University. Prior to joining Marquette, she was in practice with Aurora Advanced Healthcare. She received her medical education from Wayne State University School of Medicine, and completed her residency training at Columbia St. Mary’s Family Medicine Residency. She serves as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians. |

Rich Roberts, MD, JD, FAAFP, FCLM, President of the World Organization of Family Doctors (Wonca) and professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health, was awarded the 2012 John G. Walsh Award by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Established in 1973, the John G. Walsh Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the AAFP. Designed to recognize long-term commitment, rather than any single significant contribution, the Walsh Award is given on the basis of dedicated, effective leadership toward furthering the development of family medicine. Roberts is past president of the American Academy of Family Physicians and its Foundation, the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians, and the Wisconsin Medical Society. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed a family practice residency at UCLA-Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center. Since 1987, Roberts has practiced as a family doctor in Belleville, Wisconsin, a rural community of 1900 people. |
Dr. Hummel is a family physician in private practice in West Allis. She has been a member of the Medical Society's Board of Directors since 2007, is an alternate delegate to the AMA and is a past president of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. Dr. Byron Crouse has been awarded AAFP’s prestigious Thomas W. Johnson award for 2011! The award recognizes outstanding contributions to family medicine education, an honor Dr. Crouse richly deserves for his continuous support of family medicine students over his thirty-year career. Dr. Crouse’s passion for rural family medicine and his students is evident in his many innovative educational programs, including his development of the interdisciplinary Minnesota Rural Health School as well as the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine at UW—Madison. Both programs are well known for the impressive number of students who go on to careers in rural family medicine. Dr. Crouse was previously recognized for his influence as a teacher when he was named 2008 Family Medicine Educator of the Year by the WAFP. Congratulations to WAFP resident member Robert Jeske, MD on his appointment to AAFP’s Commission on Health of the Public and Science (CHPS). Dr. Jeske’s enthusiasm, passion and commitment to family medicine make him the ideal choice for this position. Locally, Dr. Jeske has been involved in health care projects in the LaCrosse community and has been active in the LaCrosse-Mayo family residency program. He has helped recruit students to the program and has been involved in community outreach efforts. At the state level, Dr. Jeske is active in the WAFP and the WI Medical Society. At the national level, he has served on two AAFP commissions: Quality and Practice and Governmental Advocacy. Dr. Jeske was also the recipient of the 2011 Rich Roberts Future Leader Award. As a key member of the AAFP Commission on Health of the Public and Science, Dr. Jeske will be working with other committee members on policy development for public health issues and review of clinical practice guidelines. Additionally, this commission will make recommendations for clinical preventative services, promote usage of new scientific and practice knowledge as well as work to address issues of cultural proficiency and disparities in health and care. Dr. Barbara Hummel, the Wisconsin Medical Society's Board Vice Chair, has been appointed to a three-year term on the AMA's Senior Physicians Group Governing Council. The council meets at the AMA annual and interim meetings and plays an important role in supporting senior physicians.


WAFP Member, Dr. Thomas Willet has been recognized in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for bringing affordable health care to the community by cutting back on office costs, and in turn, passing the savings on to the patients. Using this system, has not changed his income. Furthermore, he has met with local government to propose implementation of a pilot Medicaid program for the state.
