The Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians 64th Annual Meeting and the 43rd Annual Winter Refresher Course for Family Medicine took place January 29 – February 1, 2013 in Waukesha, WI. The event was a great success, offering a variety of presentations providing clinical updates for primary care providers.

- 43nd Annual Winter Refresher Course participants attend a plenary presented by Wanda Filer, MD on Primary Care in the 21st Century.
- 2012 Family Physician of the Year, Barbara Ankarlo, MD receives her award from WAFP past president, Alan Schwartzstein, MD.
- Guests enjoy the WAFP-Foundation Reception and Silent Auction. Over $2,000 was raised to help support Family Medicine Resident activities in 2013.
- WAFP-Foundation held its first Silent Auction, boasting a variety of items such as restaurant gift cards, event tickets, a Kohler golf package and a private plane trip.
- Incoming WAFP President, Suzanne Gehl, MD is sworn in by AAFP board Member, Wanda Filer, MD.
- Incoming WAFP president, Suzanne Gehl, MD is presented with the President's Medal by outgoing president, Brad Meyers, MD.
- 2012 Family Medicine Educator of the Year, Isaac Pierre, MD receives his award from the WAFP Membership Committee Chair, Mark Thompson, MD.

Major events this year included:
WAFP-Foundation Reception
On January 30, the
Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians–Foundation hosted a reception prior to the Annual Meeting Dinner and Induction of Officers. Reception guests enjoyed participating in the WAFP-Foundation’s Silent Auction and Gift Basket Drawings while connecting with fellow WAFP members and guests and enjoying music performed by The Lakeside Strings.
The Silent Auction was truly a highlight of the Foundation Reception this year, raising more than $2,000 to support Family Medicine Resident activities in 2013. Additionally, donations were received as part of the Reception Gift Basket Drawing to help fund the
Send a Student to the National Conference Campaign. We are just over one-third of the way to reaching our target goal to send 30 Wisconsin students to AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students this year.

WAFP 64th Annual Meeting Dinner and Induction of Officers
After the WAFP-Foundation Reception, members and guests were welcomed to the 64th Annual Meeting Dinner and Induction of Officers. After dinner, the WAFP Business Meeting was opened with a year in review presented by Dr. Brad Meyers, Dr. Wanda Filer (AAFP) and Dr. Suzanne Gehl. Outgoing WAFP board members Dr. Jensena Carlson and Dr. Christa Pittner-Smith were thanked for their service.
WAFP officers and directors for 2013 inducted by Dr. Wanda Filer. Dr. Filer also
conferred the honor of AAFP Degree of Fellow to Dr. Doug Moard, a champion of Family Medicine. Dr. Meyers introduced the new WAFP chapter president, Dr. Suzanne Gehl, who gave her inaugural address, sharing remarks about the upcoming year. Special recognition went to Dr. Meyers as the outgoing President and new Chair of the Board, and Dr. Alan Schwartzstein as the outgoing Chairman.
WAFP Special Awards
In recognition of her outstanding service to her patients and her community,
Dr. Barbara Ankarlo was honored with WAFP’s Family Physician of the Year Award at a special luncheon on January 30, 2013.
As part of a Preceptor Appreciation luncheon held on January 31, 2013,
Dr. Isaac Pierre received the honor of being named WAFP Family Medicine Educator for his outstanding work as a physician educator.
Self-Assessment Modules (SAM) Sessions
In addition to educational tracks, plenary sessions and networking opportunities offered at the Winter Refresher, the WAFP conducted two Self-Assessment Modules. Dr. Janice Litza facilitated a session on Well Child Care and Doctors Irene Hamrick and Jacqueline Gerhart facilitated a session on Care of the Vulnerable Elderly. Both sessions were well attended and offered participants the opportunity to complete the knowledge assessment portion of their ABFM Maintenance of Certification as a group.
WAFP Committee Meeting
Six WAFP committees met the morning of January 31, 2013 for a breakfast get-together, providing members a chance to meet committee leaders and volunteers to ask questions and find out more about helping advance WAFP’s strategic plan for 2013.
