The honorees will be presented with their awards at our Annual Business Meeting 11:30am-12:45pm on March 7 at the Trade Hotel in Milwaukee, which all WAFP members are welcome to. Family Physician of the Year
James Bigham, MD, MPH, FAAFP
Dr. James Bigham’s innovative approach to preventive care and his dedication to his community make him a standout Family Physician. In addition to providing comprehensive care, Dr. Bigham has integrated public health initiatives into his practice. Notably, he developed training programs for medical students on firearm safety and suicide prevention, emphasizing respectful, informed conversations with patients. His efforts reflect a deep commitment to patient wellness and community safety.
Family Medicine Educator of the Year
Patricia Téllez-Girón, MD
Dr. Patricia Téllez-Girón is a leader in both clinical care and medical education, known for mentoring underrepresented students and advancing health equity. She serves as an advocate for diverse communities, particularly Latinx/e populations, through initiatives like the Latino Health Council of Dane County. As an educator, she champions culturally relevant care and inspires the next generation of physicians to lift up underserved communities. Her work exemplifies the transformative power of compassionate, inclusive healthcare education.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Barbara A. Hummel, MD
With a career spanning decades, Dr. Barbara Hummel has made an indelible mark on Family Medicine in Wisconsin. A trailblazer in advocacy and leadership, she has chaired numerous committees and held prominent roles in the Wisconsin Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Hummel’s unwavering dedication to her patients and her independent Family Medicine clinic sets a shining example. Her lifetime commitment to compassionate care and health policy has inspired countless colleagues and patients.
